As a reader, I can’t stomach it anymore, Keith Gottschalk.

While I believe writing is a powerful tool that can help us process then transcend whatever ails us, print pity parties make me feel icky.

There’s a huge difference between the disarming sincerity of someone clearly out of their depth and trying so very hard to hold it together with as much heart as they can and someone hamming up pathos for clicks and bucks according to a tried and tested formula.

When writing about mental health, my underlying message is always the same: I don’t want you to feel glad you’re not me, I want you to understand you could be.

The idea is to normalize those awkward conversations but without self-compassion, it’s impossible.
