While my sense of belonging is more continental than national as I’ve moved so much and am a mix of cultures and languages, my relationship with America is one of utter and complete alienation.
I’m glad you mention history as many of our fellow citizens don’t even seem to know the basics. I’m constantly having to explain the Holocaust and the horrors of Nazism, and this level of ignorance makes me furious every time.
It is unconscionable.
And then there’s the folks whose jaw drops when I tell them the Statue of Liberty was a gift from the country where I was born i.e. France.
Some days, I just can’t deal with any of it.
Even though I’m going back to Europe for challenging personal reasons, I look forward to being there again. Even in the midst of cancer chaos, I felt more at peace, more settled, more myself than I had in a very long time.
