I’m glad it resonates, Mark Kolke. I don’t understand why so many folks just regurgitated the official Medium post without taking a moment to think about anything other than money.

Capitalism and individualism are hard drugs and they’re destroying the internet.

To me, Medium is this incredible tool which allows us to break down the walls of solipsism, connect, learn, and create together both here and off the platform.

What’s more, Medium gives us the opportunity to get compensated while enjoying complete editorial freedom and — that I know — this is actually unheard of. The closest I got was when I created some public media service from scratch in Portugal but it was still at least 75% news-based.

I was free to experiment and decide what features and interviews to do, what topics to cover and research but that was after the news were covered. Alas, the project died an undignified death due to lack of funding and politics.

In editorial terms, it was a brilliant experience that taught me the value of vocation and I absolutely loved every minute of it. In personal terms, it involved many sacrifices and eventually broke my heart but I have no regrets.

That’s why I’m hopeful about the MPP changes, especially if it means I might be able to write some actual journalism again and producing longer pieces that require an immense amount of legwork. As long as the focus was on quantity rather than quality, it wasn’t possible as interestingness got drowned out. Why spend a day on a feature when you can write three or four short essays? The pace is nothing new to me but it was as brutal as it was ruthless.

But now? I can’t wait to see what happens and in what direction Medium might involve…

Thank you for the link, I’ll have a look.
