I think what we really need are just more poetry readers who are subscribers. I’m not sure what we can do to boost subscription on the platform, aside from perhaps a referral program, which is something I would love to see.
Not a fan of that idea, Daniel Goldman. As far as I can tell, you and I have a similar professional background and I believe quality writing speaks for itself.
Quality writing from diverse voices alone should be what sells Medium, not some referral program that turns all writers into sales people.
Sales is not where the added value of writers lies, something I’ve argued with editors in the past when one of the news outlets I worked for told me to figure out myself how to secure funding for a project they had initially approved.
For this project, I had shipped out to one of the most remote and inhospitable locations in North America for six months. The funding convo only happened after my arrival so I dropped the project then dropped the news outlet and became a hotel receptionist making twice as much as I was a journo even though I was on minimum wage.
The news outlet bit the dust a few months later because it had focused on money and getting as many advertisers as possible instead of editorial quality.
