Your words echo mine — the lack of community on the road was discombobulating. Through the necessities of work, I’d become fast friends with colleagues only for us to go our separate ways after a couple of weeks. That was the hardest part. Some of them stayed in touch wherever we were, but most didn’t because the job was so demanding you literally have no time to yourself when doing it. Your brain shuts down for a few hours every night and then it’s all systems go the next day, focusing on everyone but yourself.
“The list of places I call home” is a beautiful way of capturing exactly how I’ve felt all those years, and still feel toward those countries and cultures, all of which I now carry a little bit of (or a big chunk, depending) with me.
Hope Tokyo is everything you want it to be. I haven’t been there yet, but if the opportunity presents itself, I most certainly will as it’s somewhere that fascinates me.
