Sorry to hear we’ve both had similar experiences… Divorce is generally a cause of much distress for kids, and my parents’ was as ugly as could be, but I derived a huge sense of relief as a result. That’s not to say life improved much after that, but at least they stopped hurting each other. Thanks to my mom, I knew I didn’t have to stay in a terrible marriage. Had I done so, my life would have been quite different and I probably wouldn’t be around anymore to write about it.
All this being said. I never for one moment thought my mom and I would ever get on, much less get close, so this still amazes me on a daily basis. That has to be the one upside to depression.
