This echoes my own experience with my mother, Shannon Ashley, minus the religious element. By the time I was done reading your piece, I realized I’d been holding my breath, such is the strength of the trauma I still carry. Then again, my mom and I are OK now but it wasn’t always thus.
Much like you, I didn’t realize there was anything wrong for the longest time because it was all I knew.
I’m glad you wrote about this because the topic remains taboo. And yet, if there was more widespread awareness of domestic abuse against children, kids wouldn’t have to go through what you and I went through.
I wish you the best of luck and patience and compassion while you host your mother. Hopefully this time spent together will help improve your relationship but please, do remember to take care of you. xo
