…how far having a couple phrases and using hand motions can get you. But it makes sense, doesn’t it? Most places you’d think to visit rely in part on foreigners’ money to make their living. So it’s in their interest to learn at least the basics of English.
This line disturbs me deeply, and I write this as a former tour director and a serial immigrant deeply integrated in cultures other than the ones I was born with.
The advice I always gave my passengers was to remember they were a guest in a foreign land, not a tourist there to impose their ways only I worded it a little more gently.
I’ve also had many an argument with pax who treated locals like servants who should cater to their every whim just because they were paying.
Remain humble, honor our shared humanity, go toward others, and don’t act like you own the place because you have some dollars in your hand…
And please, make a genuine effort on the linguistic front, if only to prove to yourself that you can.
